For about 3 years we have been living in an apartment, in the town that neighbors my in laws. We closed on our apartment February 2020 (yes, that February 2020). As the world began to shut down, and furniture delivery was delayed and delayed, we finally moved in around mid summer 2020. Our one bedroom apartment has been the perfect launching pad for getting into the city for work and fun, easy access to highways for Oban and me to go hike, we’ve hosted 3 Super Bowls here, 2 Christmas’, many girls nights, and Sunday football couch days. But once spring rolled around, we’d find ourselves, year after year, wanting to be outside, in a yard, grilling, sitting by a firepit, and chasing Oban. For those of you who’ve followed us for a while, also know, Oban is a true outdoor dog. Whether hiking or falling asleep on the deck, he just wants to be outside (except in August, don’t even think of trying to entice him outside in August humidity lol). While we’ve enjoyed the ease of apartment ownership and the little responsibility that comes with it, we were ready for a change.
As luck would turn out, at the same time we were looking for more space, my in-laws were looking for less, ready to shed the responsibilities of managing a house. The convo went something like, “hey you guys and Oban love being here, the yard, and proximity to the city, and we love your apartment - want to buy each others’ places?” For us, it was a no brainer, Oban loves my in-laws’ yard, and I’m fairly certain he has always thought he owned it himself; and lets face it, Oban is at the center of most of our life decisions. With a yard he loves, space for us to WFH and live, and endless possibilities to make the space our own, we started the journey to buy my husband’s childhood home.
So, here we are today, getting close to move day, packing our apartment, and doing all the paperwork required to purchase a house. Holy moly is it a lot of paperwork; paystubs, bank statements, tax returns, rate negotiation, talking to so many lenders, appraisals, inspections - it’s like a second full time job managing it. Lesson learned, don’t put your phone number into too many mortgage websites, or your phone will LITERALLY never stop ringing - 37 phone calls in 3 days.
I’m so excited to blog about this exciting new chapter as we move from apartment owners to home owners, through home renovation, and hosting in our new space! Stay tuned next week, when I’ll share an update on packing - what we’re taking, what we’re selling, and what we’re donating.
